Bristol CoRE statement on the anniversary of the murder of George Floyd

“Still much work to be done to achieve racial equality”

On 25th May, Bristol Commission on Race Equality (CoRE) join many people and communities around the world to mark the first anniversary of the brutal murder of George Floyd, in Minneapolis, US. We want to acknowledge this significant moment together. The heart-breaking incident is a reminder to us all that racism is still prevalent within our communities and that there is still much work to be done to achieve racial equality. Individually or as communities its high time to take practical steps to dismantle racist power structures which remain a norm in our society. Like many other places and communities across the globe, here in Bristol we felt Minneapolis and the world’s grief and anger.

As Bristol CoRE, we know the tragic murder of George Floyd by a police officer has had a huge impact on our diverse communities, especially our Black, Asian, and other ethnic communities. We are aware of the grief and trauma that many of the Bristol residents have faced over the past year – including during the COVID-19 pandemic and its disproportionate impact on Black, Asian and other ethnic communities.

However, we remain resolute and plan to do what we have been set up to do and again today, reaffirm our commitment to standing up against racism. Bristol CoRE will continue to work with organisations across the city and beyond who share our vision of wanting to address issues of racial disparities and inequalities in society. Bristol CoRE take this anniversary as a springboard to make meaningful change.

We recognise that the anniversary of George Floyd’s tragic murder has the potential to take a significant emotional toll, please seek help and support.
